Flat design

Flat design uses simplified two-dimensional forms, with shape, color, scale and spacing carrying much of the hierarchy. It can organize interfaces and graphics; Flat Illustration applies those choices to illustrated subjects.

Origins and attribution

NN/g (Kate Moran, 2015) calls Microsoft's Metro design language and Windows 8 particularly influential in popularizing flat design from 2011, and notes that Apple's homepage resisted the trend until around 2013. Microsoft presented Metro as a minimalist, type-centric design language that is authentically digital rather than imitating physical materials. Apple completely redesigned iOS 7 in 2013, with Jony Ive stressing simplicity over clutter and ornament. Flat appearance does not remove the need for visible interaction cues. Flat Illustration is an application covered here. BUCK’s Alegria uses flat geometric shapes, enlarged limbs and nonliteral skin colors; it is a specific system associated with the informal Corporate Memphis discussion, not the origin or definition of all flat illustration.

INGREDIENTS

Clear silhouettes; flat color areas; economical depth cues; readable hierarchy. Illustrations may depict people, objects or environments. Character proportions and palettes vary; exaggerated limbs are not a requirement for all flat work.

POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS

Instructional graphics, illustrated explainers, and interface concepts that call for a consistent graphic vocabulary.

WAYS TO EXPLORE

Compare flat icons, a small interface and an illustration. Keep interface controls identifiable. Within Flat Illustration, discuss Corporate Memphis as a narrower, informal label rather than a synonym for all flat illustration.

OFTEN CONFUSED WITH

Often confused with Minimalism: Flat design concerns simplified rendering, while Minimalism concerns deliberate reduction. A flat illustration or interface can still be visually dense.
