Period

Origins and attribution
Began in Florence with Masaccio and Donatello; Brunelleschi invented single-point perspective, and Alberti set it down in De Pictura (National Gallery). The High Renaissance peaked with Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael (Tate). In the north, Robert Campin and Jan van Eyck worked in the same period. Shortly after 1400, the scholar Poggio Bracciolini created humanist script, and its cursive form became italic. Printers turned it into roman type, first used by Sweynheym and Pannartz in 1465, which became the standard in the West (Hill Museum & Manuscript Library). Much Renaissance art is Christian devotional art: use sacred figures with care. Acanthus ornament has ancient Greek and Roman precedents and later reuse; its presence alone does not establish a Renaissance origin.

RELATED STYLES
INGREDIENTS
Single-point perspective with a vanishing point; convincingly built space; weighty, lifelike figures; soft tonal modeling without harsh outlines (sfumato); balanced, harmonious composition; in lettering, humanist script, italic and roman type on light, spacious pages with white vine-scroll initials.
POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS
Book and editorial design, serif typography and lettering, and cultural or heritage identities that need calm order and classical proportion.
WAYS TO EXPLORE
Set one page in a roman serif with an italic heading, centered, with wide margins. Then draw a simple room in one-point perspective to sit behind it. Motif note: an acanthus leaf border can be studied as one ornamental reference. Its use predates the Renaissance, so the motif alone cannot date a work.
OFTEN CONFUSED WITH
Often confused with Baroque, which took Renaissance naturalism and made it theatrical, and Neoclassical, a later classical revival that can look similar on the surface; the Renaissance is the original revival of classical art, from about 1400 in Italy.
