Origins and attribution

A descriptive word, not a named movement. Cambridge Dictionary defines utilitarian as designed to be useful rather than decorative. One documented example of information-first graphic design is the US National Park Service's Unigrid brochure system. Massimo Vignelli developed it in 1977 to standardize the look and production of the parks' printed material (Eye on Design, 2019). The NPS has made Unigrid brochures since the system launched that year.
